The Big Idea
Argentina | Next year comes into sight

It seems too early to trade around Argentina’s October 2027 general elections, but there are signs. Heavy overweight positioning in the sovereign may nevertheless limit investors that want to reduce exposure heading into next year. Mutual fund survey data show Argentina is the largest structural overweight in emerging markets, at nearly twice its 48-month average allocation. That crowded positioning could become a serious technical constraint in another election cycle.
Technicals matter, especially for the largest, most liquid emerging markets benchmark credits. Argentina has been one of the most popular credits under President Javier Milei’s economic overhaul. But recent price action remains quite worrisome and may reflect early risk reduction by active investors, which could grow into broader selling. Argentina also has lagged similarly rated credits. A temporary rebound in risk appetite did not produce the same recovery in Argentina as in peers such as Ecuador. That may reflect pre-emptive risk reduction tied to concerns about weaker yearend external conditions or uncertainty around Argentina’s October 2027 general elections.
It seems premature to trade an event 13 months in advance. But the October 2025 midterm elections showed how volatile domestic financial markets can become through election cycles. The stakes are now much higher in a general election than in a midterm, with external buffers still weak, policy flexibility limited and early polls pointing to a potentially competitive race. Milei’s re-election is still the base case. Still, other scenarios are relevant considering the importance of Argentina’s commitment to policy orthodoxy. This commitment is critical to economic reform including the zero-deficit fiscal anchor, deregulation and pro-growth initiatives in strategic sectors. This would suggest a period of higher asset price volatility that could undermine high yield carry returns as the election cycle approaches.
There are still many months for the political landscape to take shape, and a radical alternative remains only a tail risk. That argues against selling into recent weakness. Instead, investors may consider gradually reducing overweight positions by selling into strength. Sentiment has not been overly bearish, with underperformance slowing after yields moved above 10% yields, just above year-to-date ceiling. Valuations also look less misaligned versus other low-rated emerging-market peers and may find support if global risk appetite recovers. But that recovery may prompt investors to sell into strength, leaving Argentina with a weaker rebound than peers such as Ecuador. It is not clear there is enough new demand to absorb risk reduction, given crowded overweight positions and Argentina’s still-low single-B credit ratings.
Argentina may become more sensitive to risk-off sentiment and less responsive to risk-on sentiment, with Eurobond yield ranges shifting higher. That points to a more stubborn risk premium versus Ecuador. The premium may persist until overweight positioning falls meaningfully or policy surprises help shield markets from contagion. It also could narrow if political risks ease through growth and inflation trends that favor the incumbent. The election event risk should become much more relevant early next year. It is worrisome that markets are jittery so early into the election cycle, recalling market stress into the midterm elections. Consider a conservative reduction in overweight positioning, especially in longer tenors, to limit mark-to-market risk. Shorter tenors look more defensive, supported by heavy sinking-fund structures and Argentina’s track record of repayment commitment.
